The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Jessie Mueller
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever
"I’ve always dreamed about [being nominated]. I think everybody thinks about what they’d say in their Tony speech. But honestly, it just feels like, 'Oh, this is happening to me? This is what happens to other people!' I’m shocked! I’m truly honored, but it’s really hard to grasp. Last night, I was a part of an event [in Chicago] for the National Corporate Theatre Fund and Harry Connick was receiving an award. So I was hanging out with all those people, and then woke up to a call from my agent and she said, 'Wake up, you’ve been nominated for a Tony!' I wasn’t expecting it at all. I’m so grateful, but I was not expecting it. My boyfriend Andy and I kinda looked at each other and we were like, 'OK, I guess this is happening!' I’m grateful and overwhelmed and shocked; it’s crazy. I immediately called my parents and told them the news, and it’s just been an outpouring of love from all my friends from Chicago. It’s been a whirlwind since I got here, and I’m so humbled and grateful by the way the community has embraced me. I feel amazingly lucky to have been a part of the show and to be recognized in this way, and alongside these women—it’s really incredible."
